This was almost exactly my experience as a freelancer. I thought I’d work on big, important journalism projects, but that was like 10 percent of the time. The rest of it was comms consulting and copywriting because those jobs pay better and they’re easier to get. My new theory is that you need to work the 9–6 (if you can get it, obviously) and make your guaranteed money in those hours. That way your after-hours are yours to do the projects you want to do with no money stress.
